Arts organization and archive preserving African American film, literary, performing, and visual arts, built around a collection the organization describes as more than 40,000 films, posters, photographs, and recordings dating from the 1920s. It was founded by the children of Detroit collector James E. Wheeler (1941-2022) to continue his work, and operates a nonprofit arm, The Black Canon Collection, a 501(c)(3). The organization programs traveling exhibitions and screenings drawn from a collection spanning film, posters, lobby cards, photographs, magazines, and albums.
